Ayurvedic Home Remedies: Tips for Healthy Living

To be born as a human being is a very rare, difficult and very significant feat. The old poetess Avvaiyar says so in her song. When Lord Muruga asks her what the rarest or most difficult thing on earth is, Avvaiyar answered this way. Aridhu, aridhu, maanidarai pirathal arithu. There are so many living beings on earth like animals, birds, insects, plants, creepers etc. Human beings alone are endowed with the sixth sense to differentiate good and bad.

There are a good number of sayings in the old Tamil literature that stress the importance of human birth. They all exhort human beings to make the most of their birth on this planet earth. Human beings should strive to manifest their fullest potential in all spheres of life instead of wasting their time in trivialities. A healthy body and a healthy mind is the cornerstone on which the whole edifice of a fulfilled and balanced life can be built. Subramania Bharathi, the greatest Tamil poet of the 20th century advises ‘strengthen your body’.

The complexity of the human body is beyond comprehension. With evolution over millions of years, the human body has acquired this phenomenal power. It is this complex structure that enables the human body to withstand and adapt itself to the various environmental onslaughts. Its efforts are geared toward establishing a harmony in human nature. Our ancestors knew for a fact that the human body has an inherent capacity to heal itself. The only requirement on the part of the sick ones is to cooperate with this healing process and not to hinder it.

When there is a radical change in lifestyle it tests the limits of human body's endurance. The contemporary sedentary lifestyle was alien to our ancestors. Lack of exercise, fast food diet, prolonged stress, all these can harm our body. The human body’s capacity to reestablish harmony can weaken as a result of prolonged attack. But the best part is, most of the modern day ailments can be cured with lifestyle changes alone. Herbs can help quicken the process.

Ayurvedic Home Remedies: Happy New Year 2011

I would like to wish a happy new year to all my readers. The year 2010 was an eventful one in the alternative medicine world. The conventional medicinal system has started to slowly recognize and accept, albeit grudgingly and halfheartedly, the benefits of alternative systems. The prohibitive cost of the health care offered by the conventional system and the dangerous side effects of medications and tests etc have caused the ordinary Joe to turn to alternative systems for solace.

On the other hand, a number of charlatans and snake oil peddlers with no credentials have sprung up almost everywhere posing as alternative health specialists. The gullible patients are at the mercy of these so called experts who provide questionable and often dangerous treatment modalities. They fleece the patients as much as possible in the name of alternative systems. Such activities strike a deathblow to the credibility of the alternative system.

The Health Department in India both at the Center and State level should initiate action against such elements and bring them before the law and punish them to the fullest extent possible. This will be a deterrent to those waiting in the wings. The Department should disseminate information on alternative systems and genuine practitioners making use of both offline and online channels. Creating awareness of not just the alternative systems but also genuine alternative experts is the need of the hour. Let us hope that we may able to see some action on this front in 2011.

The year 2010 had been the most profitable one for me, as far as this blog is concerned. I made a nice little income from Adsense. The irony is I had hardly contributed anything meaningful the whole year. There were only five articles in 2010. I wish I could have done more. I was tied up with other activities the whole of last year. I will try my best to come up with useful articles in 2011. I thank you all for your patronage. Best wishes and good health to you all!!
